The Girl from Andros, Terence

This would make an excellent basis for a modern comedy about arranged marriage. The lead character should be changed to a woman, who is secretly pregnant, so that when she reveals her pregnancy, or proves it with a test, at the end, there is no need for the resolution to come from the citizenship question, thus removing the reliance on Athenian marriage laws, which is not replicable now. By switching the sexes of the main characters you would make it immediately applicable to many modern situations and change the fact that Terence’s version has no real female characters, which would simply not work for a modern audience. I wonder if the writer of The Only Living Boy in New York were thinking of Terence when they devised their plot. That is, by the way, a much better film than the critics thought.
